Suspecting a Disability
Anyone (including a parent) can refer a child for evaluation for a suspected disability.
An evaluation is a crucial first step in the special education process for a child suspected of having a disability. Before a child can receive special education and related services, a comprehensive evaluation of the child must be conducted to see if the child has a disability and is eligible for special education under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
The evaluation process is guided by requirements as defined by IDEA and can be obtained through an evaluation that the school district performs or you have the right to have your child independently evaluated at any time at your own expense.
Taking the first step in this process can be an overwhelming situation for many parents of a child with a suspected disability. Ohio Special Education Advocacy has a keen understanding of this process and can walk you through every step to address your child's needs.
